Luthier Glue: Which should you use on a ukulele?

ukulele Firstly, I should warn you I’m not a luthier myself – I don’t even dare open a wine bottle without medical assistance close by – but reserch suggests that by far the most popular glue to use to repair or build a ukulele amongst luthiers is Titebond Original Wood Glue. I’m told you have to make sure that the glue is the original, red top kind.

Actually, the very best glue is generally hide glue or some variant thereof. However, hide glue is somewhat finicky to work with due to it’s limitted opening time, need to be kept at a certain temperature, difficulty to apply.

Titebond is a decent compromise, but hide glue is best.

A couple of reasons to use hide glue. It’s watersoluble, so you can take an instrument apart later if necessary. More important from my perspective is that it dries “hard”, and isn’t as likely to dampen vibrations as much as some glues which dry “softer”. It also tends to suck the joint tighter as it dries, relying less on extreme clamping pressure to get a good joint.
Anyway, those are my opinions… :)
